legal recreational cannabis arizona

Unfortunately, Arizona failed to pass the Arizona Marijuana Legalization Initiative (Proposition 205) in the November 2016 election. However, Arizona residents of Arizona have embraced marijuana, and there are now 122 medical cannabis dispensaries in the state. Hopefully, the state will have a rethink of their position on recreational cannabis shortly!

The best advice we can give to tourists looking to partake in the cannabis culture is discretion. It’s best to keep your marijuana use out of public areas, but if you must smoke out in the open, a discreet vape pen is your best option.

You will see many different flower strains categorized by their strains ranging from strong Indicas to strong Sativa and everything in between. Each strain can have different effects, so be sure to ask the budtender for assistance in choosing the best marijuana strain for you. Strong Sativa strains are known for their general energizing, uplifting, and head high effects while Indicas are known for their full body highs and sedative effects.

Dispensaries will also sell many other types of cannabis products, including but not limited to:

  • Concentrate: essential oils of the cannabis plant. Warning: they can be very potent!
  • Edible: cannabis infused foods, drinks, or candies. Warning: they can be very potent! Make sure you check the serving size before enjoying and remember the effects can take up to one hour to hit you.
  • Transdermal Products: lotions, creams, massage oils and such infused with cannabis. These products are not psychoactive and won’t get you high.
  • Seeds: seeds that can be used to grow your own marijuana plants. Stores will have many different strains of Indicas and Sativas.
  • Clones: healthy seedlings ready to be grown.

In order to buy cannabis, you need a medical card, which you can get from specific doctors in the state. In Arizona, you may also use a medical card from another state. Once you have a medical marijuana card, you can visit one of the state-licensed medical marijuana dispensaries.

Legally, you can only consume ‘weed’ while on private property. However, if you must partake in public, a vape pen is your most discreet option.

Medical marijuana patients are allowed 2.5 ounces every two weeks, and if patients live 25 miles or more from the nearest dispensary, they are able to grow up to 12 marijuana plants.

All marijuana and marijuana products bought in Arizona must be consumed in Arizona. This won’t change if the Arizona Marijuana Legalization Initiative is passed.

Even if ‘weed’ is legalized in Arizona, you can always get in trouble at the federal level until cannabis is rescheduled, but as long as you follow the laws for marijuana in Arizona, local authorities won’t have any case with you. If passed, the Arizona Marijuana Legalization Body would legalize recreational cannabis, which could make it tough to get into trouble, but it can still happen. If you do find yourself in a pinch with the law, get an Arizona cannabis lawyer to help!
